How does the Internet affect the way we learn?

In today's world, the Internet plays a huge role in our way of gathering new information. The internet is not only shaping our lives but physically altering our brains which has sparked a lively and ongoing debate on whether the internet is a helpful source when coming to learning or are book, articles, magazines, etc better than the internet for the information your taking away from it. From information that I have found other information from authors that have written articles talking about how the internet changing the way the brain works. And how reading a lengthy article or book used to be easy, because their minds would always get caught up on the narrative that leads to spending hours strolling through long stretch's of prose. Now their concentration is lost after two or three pages from the reading. They claim that they get fidgety and begin to look for something else to. The reading that once was easy has no became a challenge.

People don't understand that when your on the internet there are so many ways that you can be distracted. Getting your work done in an environment that is quite and non distracted is the area where your going to be the most focused and continue to stay on track with the work.

  1. I really do like having information so accessible to me through the internet, yet at the same time, I am very skeptical about many of the sources I view. I really like having computers for research though because it is so easy to hit "control - f" to search for something in a document, compared to the old fashioned way of reading every word in a book.
Don't get me wrong, I love reading, and I have actually read a book and a half this weekend for fun, but when it comes to educational reading or research, I am very thankful for technology.

  2. Although I constantly find myself getting distracted with the internet, I am very grateful to have it. Think of all the books you've needed to write an essay on but didn't actually read the book so you looked up the sparknotes. Getting cliffnotes takes a lot more effort and is all around more difficult. I think it is up to each person to choose how they spend their time on the internet. If they can't focus and they have a problem with that, I believe they should do something about it. Take the time to read longer articles. Block distracting websites for a week, or month. I think that the internet is a vast system, but it's nothing we can't handle.

  3. One of the main things that I use the internet for is too find books. Either for research, or fun.
But it does seem very easy to start looking for one thing, and end up finding stuff about something completely different.
